Vision Screenings vs. Eye Exams

If you are experiencing a change in your vision or some vision challenges, you need to see a professional. Eye professionals will take you through vision screenings and eye exams. Some may think that vision screenings and eye exams are the same things, but there are significant differences between the two. Here’s what you need to know about them:

Vision Screening

This is often a short general evaluation of your eyesight. The aim is to look for any irregularities or abnormalities in your vision. The screening assesses things such as blurred vision and muscle control. It is often done by reading letters on an eye chart.

For toddlers, it is done by placing pictures in front of them since they are not old enough to read. A primary care provider can perform the screening. This care provider can be a volunteer at a health institution or even a school nurse.

Eye Exam

This is a thorough examination conducted by a certified optometrist or ophthalmologist. This is because these specialists are highly qualified to make an accurate diagnosis. The main aim here is to examine the internal and external health of the eyes.

Also, an eye exam can lead to the identification of eye conditions and the prescription of the necessary treatment. During the exam, the optometrist thoroughly examines tissues and structures inside the eye. Most people know that you have to get an eye exam before getting your prescription glasses.

The eye doctor can use the exam to diagnose glaucoma, tumors, cataracts, cancer, high blood pressure, tears in the retina, or diabetes.

What to Expect During an Eye Exam

The optometrist may take some pictures of your eyes. These pictures allow the doctor to examine the blood vessels at the back of your eyes. They can also use some special tools during the test. These may be uncomfortable, but they offer a better understanding and ensure that the diagnosis is accurate.

How Often Should You Get an Eye Exam?

Adults younger than 40 who have no underlying eye conditions should have their eyes checked every two years. Those above 40 with no underlying conditions should get their eyes checked every one to two years.

This is because this is the age where vision changes and eye diseases are likely to start. Based on the health of your eyes, your doctor will recommend how often you will need eye exams. People 60 years and older should get their eyes checked every one to two years.

How to Prepare for an Eye Exam

First, call your doctor and make an appointment. If you wear eyeglasses or contacts, do not forget to take them with you to the appointment. Also, have your family eye history with you. It might be important during diagnosis.

When you get to the doctor, mention any visual problems you may be experiencing. Additionally, update your doctor on any medication you may be taking. During the exam, the doctor may use some eye drops to dilate your pupils. Bring your sunglasses for your journey back home as your eyes will be a bit sensitive to light afterward.
